NETSCAPE HELP

  • Why do I get General Protection Faults from Netscape ?

There are several reasons that this may occur. The most common occurrences are in Windows 3.x and often occur at random times. Here are some things to check with your system to try and solve the problem:

  1. If you have 4 MB of RAM or less on your computer (that's physical memory, not hard drive space) then you may want to see about getting more memory. 4 MB of RAM is about the minimum to run these type of Internet applications. You can check your memory by clicking on Help and then clicking on About Program Manager. Your available memory will be displayed at the bottom. Because Windows uses part of your hard drive for memory the number will be about twice the amount of true RAM that you have.
  2. Another possibility may be with your systems configuration. Within Program Manager, click on File and then Run… In the Command Line box type: sysedit and click OK. This will open several configuration windows on your screen. Click on the title bar for the window that ends in config.sys This will bring the config.sys screen to the front. Scroll through your file for the following entries: files= stacks= If files= any number less that 60, please erase the current number and bump it up. The preferred entry would be files=99 but if you do not have a lot of memory then keep it around 60. For the stacks= entry please make sure that it says stacks=9,256 If you see stacks=0,0 or do not have a stacks= line, please type one in. Please enter the line somewhere near the bottom of the config.sys file. If you make any changes to your file be sure to click on File and Save to save the changes. Also, if you make any changes please close out of Windows and reboot your computer to enable the changes.
  3. Netscape can cause General Protection Faults if you are using a video card with less than 1 MB of RAM on the card. You will have to check your video card's documentation to determine how much memory is on your video card. If you have at least 1 MB of RAM on your card and are still receiving errors please check the version of the video card driver that you are using. You may need to contact the manufacturer of your computer or video card to get the latest update to the video driver that Windows is using. You can check your video display driver by opening the Main box in Program Manager and double clicking on Windows Setup. This will bring up the settings for your computer and show you the current driver being used. If your computer is 6 months or older there may already be an updated video driver available to you. Please check with your manufacturer to get the updated driver.
